National Grid is investing over £1.2million in essential gas mains replacement projects in Colchester.

The work will involve replacing 10km of iron gas mains with new hard wearing plastic pipes.

Gas mains will be replaced in the following roads:

Pear Tree Road, Blackberry Road, Winstree Road, Villa Road, Dyers Road and Heath Road plus several associated side streets.

The work is due to begin on Monday 11 April 2011 and is expected to be complete by December 2011.

National Grid’s project manager Dan Muttitt said: “To reduce disruption we will be inserting the new plastic pipes into the old metallic mains wherever possible which will mean we need less open trenches in the roads.

We apologise for any inconvenience our work may cause but this essential revamp will help ensure residents and businesses in Colchester continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in future years.

People living in areas where we will be working will receive information packs. Anyone with queries about the project can also call our 24 hour helpline number on 0800 096 5678.”

The work will also include upgrades to business and domestic gas service pipes. Engineers will need access to properties to carry out this work and we will contact those affected in advance to arrange this.

All engineers carry photo identification, and people should always ask to see official identification before letting anyone into their property. For more advice on this please call 0845 605 6677.

The work will be carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska.

It forms part of National Grid’s ongoing work to replace all metal gas mains within 30 metres of buildings, as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
