History of Mother's Day

Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins. In the UK Mother's Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent and exactly three weeks before Easter, this year Mothering Sunday falls on 2nd March.

Mothering Sunday originates from the 16th Century Christian practice, when people from smaller villages went to their nearest big church or "mother church", which was often the nearest cathedral. Anyone who visited their mother church would say that they had gone "a mothering". Domestic servants were released by their masters to visit their families on this weekend each year. Today, it's purpose is to celebrate and give thanks to our mothers.
