Free Things To Do With Children

As a parent, there are times when you can feel like your purse has a hole in it and literally leaks money.  Particularly during school holidays when you're trying to keep bored children entertained.  Here we've put together some suggestions for things to do for free or cost very little.

A Day at the Beach

A firm favourite for Summer Days (or even off season for that matter!) is a day at the seaside.  Colchester is only about 30 minutes from the coast by car or there are bus links to Mersea and rail links to Frinton, Clacton and Walton.  Apart from the cost to travel there, it costs very little for a bucket and spade and nothing to paddle or collect shells!  You can also take along some nets and buckets to do some crabbing.  Kids love catching crabs of different shapes and sizes then setting them free again.

Take the Bus Around Town

Catching the bus might not be the first thing you think of when considering fun things to do.  But if you usually drive everywhere, younger children may find a trip on the bus a novelty, watching the driver driving and passengers getting on and off.  And if it's aDouble Decker even better!  Children love sitting in the front seat of the top deck and pretending they're the driver!  Children under five are usually travel free so you only have to pay for your fare.  Or if you'd rather splash out, there is the Colchester Sightseeing tour.

A Trip To The Library

Libraries can be a good way to while away a few hours, especially on a rainy day.  There's a huge range of reading for all ages from babies upwards in Colchester's Libraries, plus you can also borrow DVD's, CD's aswell.  This Summer, all Colchester Libraries are participating in Circus Stars, the Essex Libraries Summer Reading Challenge for 2011.

Colchester's very lucky to have the beautiful Castle Park Gardens and all it has to offer.  The Victorian park is abundant in wildlife and also has a large childrens play area with slides, swings and other facilities suitable for children up to the age of 12.  There is also a large boating lake where you can hire pedal boats during summer or you can simply have a picnic on the grass.

Highwoods Country Park

Take a trip up to Highwoods Country Park.  It's about a mile north of Colchester Town centre, and covers 300 acres of attractive grassland, woodland, wetland and farmland.  Various walks and trails provide the opportunity to spot a wide range of wildlife and are suited to different levels of ability/disability.  Facilities include angling, a Visitor Centre and easy access trail.

Fruit Picking

If there are Blackberries growing near where you live, why not give each child a container so they can see how many they can collect.  Then make a delicious pie or crumble for dinner!  It's a chance to enjoy seasonal food and doesn't cost a penny.  Alternatively, why not visit one of the local Pick Your Own Farms in and around Colchester.  What better way to enjoy a morning or afternoon outdoors!
